Sapsis Rigging, Inc. is the recognized leader in North America for rigging safety inspections. Since 1981 we have conducted over 1,000 inspections of theaters, arenas, hotels, churches, theme parks and other performance based venues.
Our inspectors are ETCP Certified, have at least 15 years experience working at Sapsis Rigging and have each inspected hundreds of theatres.
Why you need a Rigging System inspection:
Rigging systems are subjected to varied amounts of use and, in some cases, abuse. To insure that your system is operating safely and efficiently, it should be inspected on a regular basis. In addition, OSHA requires that all hoisting machinery be inspected annually. 1926.550(a)(6) *(See below)
Here's how it works:
We will send you a written estimate showing the inspection cost along with the anticipated travel expenses. Then we will need your written approval to schedule a date for the inspection. You should allow for at least 3- 4 weeks after we receive your order for scheduling the inspection.
Our inspectors will examine every accessible piece of equipment. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, loft and headblocks, counterweight arbors, guide tracks, rope locks, floor sheaves, operating lines battens, lift cables, cable fittings, tracks, winches, fire curtains and fall protection equipment. We also check on general safety issues such as exit lights, fire suppression equipment and smoke doors.
Typical inspections take 4 – 8 hours but the duration is really determined by the amount of gear you have and it’s accessibility. The stage area should be as clear as possible and you should have any personnel lifts or other access devices on hand that may be needed to reach out of the way areas.
A written report will be issued within 3-4 weeks of the inspection. The report will clearly identify any problems we find in your facility and outline recommendations for repairs or replacement as needed.
Cost:
The inspection fee, which is usually between $700 and $1200, plus expenses, is determined by the size and complexity of your facility. Expenses include round trip air travel, usually from Philadelphia, local ground transportation, lodging and meals. A discount is offered for multiple venues conducted during the same visit. School Districts, municipalities and other organizations with more than one facility are encouraged to call for pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How often should my equipment be inspected? The amount of use determines the frequency. OSHA 1926.550(a)(6) specifically requires that all hoisting equipment be inspected at least once a year.
Who sees the report? We send the report to the person that requested the inspection.
I don’t think I have any rigging, will you inspect my stage anyway? Yes. Please call us with a description of your space.
Can we work onstage while you do your inspection? An inspection is best conducted when the stage is clear of all scenery and props and the stage area is quiet.
What do we need to do to prepare for an inspection? Clear the space as much as is practical but please do not clean up the space as dirt, metal shavings, etc. tell a part of the story.
What guidelines do you use when performing a safety inspection? We conduct inspections using the following criteria:
• Manufacturer specifications.
• National Building, Fire and Safety codes including OSHA, NFPA, IBC, UBC and BOCA.
• Federal and State Regulations.
• Recognized standards from independent testing organizations.
• Industry Standards as developed through ANSI by ESTA, USITT and similar organizations.
• Common Sense.
